Machu Picchu sits high in the Andes, wrapped in cloud forest and ancient stonework. Most visitors arrive via Cusco, the historic Inca capital, before taking a train or bus down to Aguas Calientes. The journey itself is part of the experience, with dramatic mountain views and a shift from colonial plazas to jungle mist.
Choosing where to stay depends on your pace. Cusco offers rich culture, varied accommodation and a lively social scene, requiring an early start for the ruins.
