Muharraq is Bahrain's former capital and its third largest city, with a history stretching back to approximately 3000 BCE. For centuries until the 1930s, its primary economic activity was pearling, a legacy that still defines the city's identity and built environment today.
Today, visitors come to Muharraq for its rich cultural heritage rather than modern nightlife. The city is known as a centre for the arts and one of Bahrain's most religiously conservative districts, offering a deeply authentic experience focused on history, architecture and traditional hospitality.
